Meditate at Eight: Ponderings
This morning I was pondering on the differences between a compass and a GPS. I don't know why that came to mind this morning, but it did, and so I'm sharing it with you. I get sidetracked by the oddest things sometimes. I think it's fair to say that the GPS is the present and the compass is the past. Few of us ever use a compass, but almost all of us rely on our GPS. This may explain why we struggle at times with God and faith. Because God is more like a compass and faith means learning to let go of GPS expectations.
“I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8).
In today's world, we rely on and trust GPS, those calm digital voices that provide turn-by-turn directions and caution us when we’ve gone astray. A compass works differently. It doesn’t tell us every step of the journey. It doesn’t calculate the fastest route or warn about traffic ahead. A compass points—steadily, faithfully—toward true north. We still have to choose our path, navigate the terrain, and recalculate our own route when obstacles appear.
In many ways, God’s guidance works like a compass, pointing out the way to go and offering counsel along the way, but leaving the details to us. We often want God to function more like GPS. Tell me exactly where to go. Recalculate when I mess up. Get me there quickly and efficiently. But Scripture suggests something quieter and deeper. God offers direction more than instruction. God points us toward him and what is true, good, and life-giving ... and gives each of us freedom in how we will respond.
A compass requires stillness, attention, and trust. God’s guidance often comes when we pause, pray, and allow God to reorient us toward love, justice, mercy, and faithfulness. The compass God gives us provides a steady point of reference when the landscape is confusing. God is our constant: unchanging, trustworthy, and quietly pointing us home.
Prayer: Faithful God, when my life feels disoriented and my choices unclear, re-center me in your love. Teach me to pause, listen, and trust your steady guidance. Align my heart with what is true and good, and help me walk forward, confident that you are leading me. Amen.
